HOW WE BEGAN

About 19 years ago, a group of 5 people came together for a good reason – to dedicate their resources, time and skills in reaching out to those children who were engaged in labour and their families were in need, We started with 150 children of vegetable vendors in Okhla vegetable market area, New Delhi with an aim to mitigate child labor and mainstream those children with school for the sake of availing regular education irrespective of their status, caste, creed and religion. The vision of the organization is to develop a society for conducting programmes of welfare and development the commons with emphasis on socially deprived community to undertake all such activities that would promote change and transformation in the society in the area related to Education, life skills, health and social economic reforms for sustainable and uncountable development.

EFRAH-Empowerment for Rehabilitation Academic & Health is a society started in 1997 for social transforming and came in legal existence in 1999 with a mission “to work for the holistic development of people living in dehumanized and deprived situation in the society without any discrimination on the basis of caste, creed and religion”. EFRAH believes in the basic capacities of people to develop as useful citizens capable of managing their affairs and contributing towards the development of community with active participation of people with exhaustive intervention in the field of Education (Facilitating children through learning centers & mainstreaming those children with school, Advocating Right to Education Act implementation and importance of social & financial education), Life Skills and Livelihood (Vocational Training, Self Help Group formation, Micro Finance & placement of students capacitated through vocational training), Health (RCH Awareness & HIV/AIDS prevention), Disaster Risk Reduction (Awareness and increased coping capacity to shocks induced to disaster) and Rights (Advocacy for Child Rights, domestic violence and sexual harassment related to Adolescent girls/Women). At community level, we organize peer groups and orient/capacitate them for concerned matters along with group management. Our capacity to carry out the project is our 19 year rapport with the community and our experience to implement several community development programs, especially in the area of education and women empowerment.

EFRAH is functioning through child centered community development approach and advocacy is a part of our each program. We adopted “education and rights” as a tool for social change particularly among informal economy sector as well as unorganized community. “EFRAH" is a member of “credibility Alliance” has been Accreditation under “Desirable Norms” prescribed for good governance of Voluntary organization.

The objectives of the organization :

  • To promote and provide quality education to children who are socially &economically deprived.
  • To eliminate social and cultural discrimination that limits the demand for girl’s education.
  • To promote human dignity and awareness of duties & right.
  • To undertake activities for accelerating social reform through educational &economic upliftment.
  • To extend and access cooperation from like-minded individuals associated with different organizations,to advocate & network for social issues.
  • To extend academic and organizational support for establishment of educational institutions in backward area.
  • To promote and support community health action through voluntary as well as governmental initiatives.
  • To educate people on the various aspects of self employment, encourage and assist in linking them with different financial institution to establish their own means of employment.

OUR STRATEGIES

EFRAH believes that Rights are inalienable. EFRAH has been advocating for establishing rights based and is working for Children and women’s entitlement to the resources to make economically self-reliant. As we believe that practice is better than precept, some specific policies have been laid down for our organization to be followed at both levels both in our office and Community activities. Though we have been practicing and following the policy informally, we feel that a proper and specific articulation of Gender, HR, Child protection and Procurement policies would further strengthen our position with regard to equity.
